Over Nickerie

Nickerie, gelegen in het noordwesten van Suriname, is een district met een rijke geschiedenis. In de 18e eeuw vestigden zich Schotten en Engelsen met hun slaven aan de Corantijn- en de Nickerierivier nadat Suriname onder Engels bewind kwam in 1799. Deze kolonisten bouwden plantages op en begonnen met het verbouwen van katoen, koffie, cacao en suikerriet. In de 19e eeuw werden de plantages in Nickerie steeds welvarender. Plantages zoals Paradise, Waterloo en Hazard waren belangrijk voor de economie van het gebied.
In diezelfde tijd werd Coronie samengevoegd met Nickerie en werd het district “Nieuwe Kolonie” genoemd. Later, in 1851, werd Coronie afgesplitst van Nickerie.

Raoul Hohmarow

My name is Raoul Hohmarow. I was born and raised in the beautiful Nickerie, a place that has always held a special place in my heart. After high school, I left for Paramaribo to continue my studies at the IOL, with a focus on mathematics. Nowadays I live in the Netherlands, where I have built my career. Yet my love for Suriname, and in particular Nickerie, remains undiminished.
With the experiences and knowledge I have gained in the Netherlands, I feel a strong urge to give something back to my hometown. Nickerie has grown into the second city of Suriname in recent years. This is a development that I am very proud of and which I would like to continue to support.
That is why I am pleased to announce the launch of a new website, specifically focused on Nickerie. The goal of this website is to put Nickerie on the world map, with a special focus on tourism. We want to showcase the beauty and unique charm of Nickerie with the rest of the world and invite more people to discover this hidden gem.
